Partnership of the giants
Two global shipping giants, Maersk and CMA CGM, have embarked on a collaborative journey to drive decarbonization initiatives within the maritime industry. Recognizing the urgent need for greener practices, both companies have set ambitious net-zero targets for their shipping operations and have made substantial strides in promoting sustainable maritime solutions.
Maersk and CMA CGM, leaders in the container shipping sector, have joined hands to expedite the transition toward environmentally friendly shipping practices. They have not only pledged to achieve net-zero emissions but have also identified scalable technologies with the potential to make a substantial impact within this decade.
Both companies are investing heavily in the development and acquisition of green vessels. Maersk has placed orders for vessels capable of running on bio/e-methanol, while CMA CGM has opted for LNG-propelled ships that can also operate on bio/e-methane, a sustainable alternative to traditional LNG. These investments signify a commitment to cleaner energy sources.
Rodolphe Saadé, Chairman and CEO of the CMA CGM Group, highlighted the power of collaboration, stating that, “By combining the know-how and expertise of two shipping leaders, we will accelerate the development of new solutions and technologies, enabling our industry to reach its CO2 reduction targets.” The companies are open to the involvement of other industry players in their collective effort.
While bio/e-methanol and LNG are currently prominent among sustainable fuel options, Maersk and CMA CGM anticipate the emergence of additional alternatives in the coming years. Together, they aim to explore and develop new greener fuels for container vessel propulsion.
The collaborative efforts of Maersk and CMA CGM will focus on several critical areas:
Both shipping giants emphasize the pivotal role of regulation in achieving decarbonization. They have welcomed the outcomes of the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) 2023 strategy for reducing GHG emissions from ships, which includes reinforced targets to combat harmful emissions. Maersk and CMA CGM remain dedicated to advocating for and encouraging IMO Member States to adopt ambitious measures for a sustainable maritime future.
Vincent Clerc, CEO of Maersk, expressed optimism, stating, “We are pleased to have an ally in CMA CGM, and it’s a testament that when we unite through determined efforts and partnerships, a tangible and optimistic path toward a sustainable future emerges.” This collaboration represents a united front in the quest for a more environmentally responsible shipping industry.
